FAQ
ChargeBoat is ChargePoint's go-to partner for marina charging deployments. ChargeBoat is looking for marinas that want to purchase a fast charging station, or apply for a grant to purchase a fast charging station.
ChargeBoat has partnered with Navier electric hydrofoil boats to install a network of fast charging stations in San Francisco Bay.
Please contact us or email [email protected] to discuss opportunities.
1. Who owns the charging station?
* The marina / grant applicant owns 100% of the charging station
2. What type of charger should I use?
* The CPE280 - 80 kW is good for most boats in 2024 / 2025
* The modular 40-600 kW Express Plus is future proof; three modules at 120 kW is a good starting point for small fleets
* Five 40 kW modules can be upgraded as vessel DC intake increases, or faster charging time is desired
* 600 kW can can handle larger vessels and ferries
3. What is the life span of a charging station?
* Typically 12 years
4. Where do I install the charging stations at my marina?
* The yellow triangles on the PG&E marina map that we provide you will show the closest transformer to your docks
* It is recommended that charging stations are installed as close as possible to a transformer to minimize installation costs
5. What sort of footprint is needed on the dock?
* The CPE 280 is the size of a typical gas station pump
* The Express Plus requires a charging station on the dock, and a charging block near the transformer
6. What infrastructure is required for a DC fast charging station?
* A dock needs to support 1,000 pounds
* CPE 250 requires 100A service
* CPE 280 requires 125A service off 480 3-phase
* A conduit line is run from the panel to the charging station on the dock
* PG&E provides TTM & BTM incentives
7. What is a TTM incentive?
* TTM is an acronym for "To The Meter"
* It covers all PG&E expenses from the distribution line to the meter
* Typical savings are $50,000 - $200,000
8. What is a BTM incentive?
* BTM is an acronym for "Behind The Meter"
* It covers marina expenses for new breakers and conduit lines from the panel to the charging station on the dock
* Typical grant award is $45,000 - $60,000
9. What is a DAC incentive?
* DAC is an acronym for "Disadvantaged Community"
* PG&E will pay 50% of charging station price
10. What are the terms of the grant and any ongoing usage?
* Grants typically re-imburse 50% of costs after the expense
* Invoices must be submitted and approved by the grantor
* Grant awards are not fixed, they are maximum amounts; if project comes in under budget, the grant adjusts to 50% of actual expenses
11. What is the cost up front?
* $1,000 to ChargeBoat for grant assistance
* $1,000 credit then applied to charging station purchase from ChargeBoat
* Engineering site plan needs to be 60% complete, typically $5,000 max
* ChargeBoat can provide Engineering referrals for a group discount
12. What is the cost for the charging station?
* CPE 280: $80,000 up front / $40,000 after grant
* Express Plus 120 kW: $120,000 up front / $60,000 after grant
* Disadvantaged Communities receive additional 50% funding of purchase price
* Prices vary according to configuration and support plans
13. Who pays for the electricity?
* The marina pays the utility compay for the monthly electricity
* The boat owner pays at the charging station for their usage at the dock
14. Is there a PG&E Business EV rate?
* Yes, it is $0.25 kWh on average
* Higher during peak hours 4pm - 9pm, lower outside those hours
15. Can I charge a higher rate if a boat stays after charging completed?
* Yes, you can adjust pricing on your ChargePoint cloud dashboard
* The ChargePoint cloud dashboard tracks all income & expenses
16. What is the typical revenue?
* The marina receives 100% of the revenue
* Breakeven Payback Period can be 1-3 years, depending on grants and incentives
* See ChargeBoat Calculator below
17. Can I buy a non-ChargePoint charging station with my grant?
* Yes and no, most grants are contingent on using an approved PG&E vendor with 5 year parts and labor OEM warranty, 98% uptime guaranteed, and 24/7 proactive monitoring
* ChargePoint assures grant compliance
18. Why should I pay ChargeBoat to help with my grant?
* ChargeBoat has proven success with two grant applications at Pier 39
* ChargeBoat is the only ChargePoint marina partner in the United States
* The ChargeBoat / ChargePoint partnership provides ongoing training, mission critical support and reliability
* ChargeBoat is submitting grant applications for a network of marinas in the San Francisco Bay area, group discounts are available on engineering & electrical work
* While there are no guarantees, your grant application will benefit from being part of a larger network solution for marine charging stations, rather than an isolated proposal
19. Does the $1,000 fee pay for one grant or multiple grant applications?
* The $1,000 fee pays for multiple grant applications
20. How do I start my grant application with ChargeBoat?
* Click button below to pay $1,000 for grant application services
* This payment is non-refundable, regardless whether grant is approved or not
* A $1,000 credit will be applied to your ChargePoint charging station purchase from ChargeBoat
* We will immediately discuss engineering site plans with you
